FAMILY HELPING FAMILY

Regency understands that there is a time and place to discuss the relocation of loved ones to a retirement living environment.

To help guide you in this conversation, we’ve outlined some of the factors to consider when evaluating retirement residence choices.

Evaluating the Alternatives

Nowadays, there are a wide range of seniors’ living alternatives. Some are small operations where seniors live together as an extended family. Others are quite large with a wide array of amenities and activities to engage and enrich the residents. The level of independence and care can vary greatly, from full independence to assisted living and memory care.

Of course, geographic location is of primary importance as well. You would most likely wish to locate loved ones nearby so that you can continue to spend time with them.

Financial considerations should also be addressed. Retirement residence living can be quite affordable when you consider that most all of one’s daily needs are being met, and there is no need to maintain a home, pay taxes and utilities, buy groceries or even maintain a car. Please bear in mind however, that the higher level of care the facility provides the higher the monthly costs.

We recommend that family members conduct the preliminary research and evaluate the alternative housing choices they think best meet the needs, wants and desires of the seniors in your family. Ideally the family can narrow down the selection to one or two choices the children feel would work best for their family.

Starting the Conversation

Once a viable senior’s living option has been identified, it is time to have a conversation with your loved ones. We know from experience this can be a tricky conversation. There is anxiety about making a move, fear of the unknown or loss of independence, and concern over dislocation in lifestyle.

Our experience is that there is no better time to make the move than right now. It only becomes more challenging with age. We always advise clients to make the move sooner rather than later, so they can get away from the burdens of life and get on with the enjoyment and enrichment of life. Why wait?

At Regency we understand the stress that comes with the possibility of moving when you are a senior. To this end we have implemented a number of initiatives to make the transition as seamless and stress-free as possible.

Settling In

We know that settling into a new retirement residence is stressful for our residents.  It is not dissimilar to your first few days at a new school.  We all remember how daunting that was. We make a point of making sure all new residents are warmly welcomed into our community. Our Lifestyle Consultants go out of their way to get to know the new arrivals, understand their interests and hobbies, and introduce them to their new neighbours. Where possible we ask existing residents to take the newcomers under their wing, join them for dinner and introduce them to other residents.

We also host small block parties of immediate neighbours so that the residents get to know who is living next door or down the hall from them. Our goal is to have our new residents feeling comfortable and at home in their new environment as soon as possible. Regency Resorts are caring friendly places.  We strive to make everyone feel at home here.

We hope you will give us a chance to welcome your loved ones to the friendly caring environment that is Regency Retirement Resorts!
